Every so often you’ll see an announcement about this or that group assigning HD channels to their stations in this or that market.
What is the basis for choosing these formats?
Is it because these are the formats that are obvious or theoritical big-ish holes?
In many cases, yes.
Is it because these are the formats which “protect” (or cannibalize – depending on how you look at it) the mother ship?
In many cases, yes.
Is it because these are the formats which can eat into your competition?
Almost definitely, yes.
Is it because listeners have voted on what they’d like to hear that they currently cannot hear on the radio?
Absolutely not, no. The listener has little or no choice in the decision whatsoever (as far as I know).
Is it correct for us, as an industry, to presume what listeners want to or should hear at the very time that they have more control than ever over their choices?
